Ronda from ~ The Family Table, brings us "Food Saver Cooking"!

Food Saver Cooking

I have a confession. I am a food saver addict :). I know I am probably late on this bandwagon, but I am fully on board now and can’t wait to see how much time this little gadget will save me as I start school again at the end of August.
I guess I should start the story at the beginning. As some of you may know, I was able to sneak away at the end of June with my husband for a week long vacation in France... without the kids. After fifteen years of marriage, we finally felt comfortable in leaving our three precious ones with dear friends and beloved babysitters. My husband had a business trip and I got to be his lucky companion. It was a trip I just couldn’t pass up!
That doesn’t mean that I was not a nervous wreck about leaving, quite the opposite. And, when I get nervous, I cook. Something about being in the kitchen calms me down. I know I have said it before, but all that chopping, mincing, baking, browning and roasting really gives me peace (along with praying of course!). So, since I had all this nervous cooking energy, I decided to cook all the meals for the entire time I was away and food saver everything! That way, even though I couldn’t be home to be with the kids at meal times, they had my cooking and for some reason that made me feel a little better.
First I went through all of recipes that I thought would be freezer worthy. Second, I tried to pick some of their favorites. Third, I bought a bunch of the square foil pans that fit perfectly into the food saver bags along with all the groceries.
Each normal casserole recipe fits into two square pans thus making not one but two meals (thank you Jen for that tip!). For some things, like the mac and cheese, I had enough for two casseroles plus three individual ramekin servings. To be economical in my food saver bags, I put a layer of saran wrap over the casserole then put the directions on a sticky note on top of the wrap. Then, the whole thing went into the freezer bag to sucked clean of air and off it went to the freezer to stack up neatly.

(Amish breakfast casserole... Different containers to food saver)
In the notes to the babysitter, they knew when to pull the item for thawing then the directions were taped right on top for baking. For the casseroles that required crumb topping, I minced the crumb and put in snack size ziploc bags along with required butter and food savered that right there next to the directions.

(Mac and cheese food saver style)

(Mini egg frittatas, Mac and cheese and chicken and broccoli casserole)
The night we returned, we enjoyed a casserole for dinner and I must say I was so happy that everything tasted just as fresh as if I had made it that day. Among the items I food saved were many, many casseroles for both breakfast and dinner. Three loaves of homemade sandwich bread, muffins that I had wrapped individually and put in pouches of four, chili, refried beans, and three more mixes of my homemade bread ready to be baked when we return from our family vacation which we are on now:).
I will say that using the foil pans may not be the most economical approach for regular use however since I needed many casseroles of the smaller size, it certainly made easier stacking and freezing. Also, clean up was much easier.
I will be on the hunt for two square pans that I can line with saran wrap to do a par freeze before I pop it out of the pan and place into the freezer bag sans pan. To bake, I can remove saran and pop into the pan again and go from there. I’ll still get the same stackability and convenience yet it will be more economical.
Freezer meals never held any appeal to me before now. I used to hate freezer cooking because everything had a flat taste that just didn’t seem like I was eating fresh food. The food saver has changed my opinion on this and will forever change the way I cook food from here on out. I love that I can cook and have healthy meals ready to go for the family on the nights I have my clinical rotations. I also love that the kids can have mini hot meals ready for school lunches at a moments notice.
Would love some of your food saving tips! Please join the conversation and let us know how you have used the food saver to save you time and money in meal preparation.
Happy Cooking!

Prayer Encouragement: "Why My Kids LOVE Sky Ranch" by SkyMom, Terrie Chevaillier

Why My Kids LOVE Sky Ranch

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us
Romans 5:8

I have spent some time this summer with this question.
Why do my kids love Sky Ranch?
And what I mean is this:
I have listened to the experience of my eleven year old son who spent two separate
weeks at Sky Ranch and was loved so much by his counselors.
I have heard the desire to not attend a sports camp or miss out on some other
invitation so my fourteen year old could attend two separate times as well.
This decision resulted in him missing the majority of a baseball tournament that was scheduled
after Sky Ranch was scheduled…..his decision was to continue with plan A….Sky Ranch.
I have heard the voice of counselors.
One being my own son…..other voices being the counselors he brought home to spend
the weekend at our home.
I have had the opportunity to hang out a little more there myself this summer.
In two words, I can sum up what my boys have experienced, what I have experienced
and what I have heard others say when they share their experience.
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
You see, what happens when you go to Sky Ranch is this…..
You are loved for just the person you are.
You don’t have to be perfect, act perfect, or look perfect.
There is no box to check or form to fill out before going
to let anyone know that you have what it takes to go to Sky Ranch.
You can show up and just be the kid that God created you to be.
I will sum that up in one word:
FREEDOM
The answer to my question of why my kids love Sky Ranch so much can be summed up by the
experience they have while there.   Their experience is the gospel in action:
God loved us so much, that while we were yet sinners,
He sent His only son to die on the cross for us
so that we could be free from sin’s power which is death.
Knowing that we were a people who could never do enough good things
or perfect things or right things, but He loved us anyway and wants to have a
relationship with us.

Let’s Pray God’s Word:
Thank You that You loved us so much that You sent Your son Jesus to die for us.
What a gift of freedom and unconditional love.
Knowing that every good and perfect gift is from You,
thank You for Christ and thank You for Sky Ranch.
I pray that the love my children have seen at Sky Ranch
would be a lasting picture and impression of just how much You love them.
Help us to be a home that does not have perfection as its standard for acceptance.
But, an understanding that its only because of Your perfection
that we can be anything close to that.
When we fail and when our children fail,
please give us the power to love ourselves and them unconditionally.
Make our home a place where the gospel is lived out every day of the year.
I am thankful that this is the experience they get at Sky Ranch.
Help us to learn from that and then model that same experience they have there
In our homes because of Christ’s unconditional love.
Amen

Tori's SkyMoms Tips...."oh how Pinteresting!"

One of my newest obsessions pastimes is Pinterest...what is Pinterest you ask?

Pinterest is a Virtual Pinboard.

Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes. I love collecting quotes and scriptures that I can send in an email to friends when they are needing encouragement,

or a way to organize all the newest "hair braids and up do's" for my two teenage daughters!
Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests. Here is my pinboard...Tori Miller Pinterest.
Sky Ranch Pinterest even has it's own pinboard that has many ideas and DIY activities for you and your kids...we even have pinned a few Summer Camp tips!

Teach Intentionally..."Family Time…Your foundation and relationship with Jesus", with Stacy Davis ~ Bible Teacher and Sky Ranch Board Member

Family Time…Your foundation and relationship with Jesus

In your family time, this is the final week on the topic that God saves you and focus is discussing what is the foundation of your belief in God? The answer is Jesus. Jesus is the visible image of God and He came to explain God. And according to 1Thessalonians 5:9-11, God destined you for salvation through Jesus and to live together with Him, which means that once you are saved by Jesus, you live in a relationship with Him from the moment of trusting Him to save you. Believing Jesus should be the cornerstone or foundation of your relationship with God, and this topic would connect well with the next family time topic discussing “Your relationship with Jesus”.  I would suggest to add the next family time to this week’s lesson. The gospel of Jesus Christ needs to be the foundation of your belief and your relationship with Jesus will build from that foundation.
As a Mom, I found the best way to make sure my kids have a strong foundation and know the gospel is to ask them to share the gospel with me. Each time that my kids practice sharing the gospel; they are solidifying their understanding of the good news of Jesus and continuing to shape their own beliefs. I have found that every time that we practice sharing the gospel, everyone’s belief in God is strengthened, including me. Then, after sharing the gospel,  I ask if there has been a change in your lifestyle because of the gospel? Has knowing the gospel made a difference? This can lead to really useful moments of conviction and my kids often made decisions to make changes in their lifestyle after thinking through these things.
This week in your family time, I would encourage you to prepare by praying for your family and asking God to help you recognize which family member is struggling in their understanding of Jesus and the importance of His actions on earth. Pray that God will give you the words to explain the part they do not understand and God will bless your efforts. Ask your family to share the gospel and share how their relationship with Jesus has been good for them.
Do you have questions or need prayer for your family? Email me at SkyMoms@skyranch.org.
I will be praying for you!

This week we are in the  11th  Month Topic and  4th & 5th  Family Time (or page  96 & 97) of the Sky Ranch Devotional “Open Your Eyes”…
Family Time 4:
Month 11 Topic:  God saves us…Your foundation
Talk with God: Read…Acts 4:10-12, Romans 1:16
~ Acts 4:10-12  Let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that by the Name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, Whom you crucified, Whom God raised from the dead – by this Name this man stands here before you in good health.  He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the very Cornerstone.  And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other Name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved.
  • Why, according to Acts 4:10-12, is Jesus called the Cornerstone?  Who rejected Him?
~ Romans 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.
  • In Romans 1:16, who is offered salvation?
Walk with God: Discuss… In Acts 4:10-12, we know the Cornerstone is Jesus, because the author is telling the listener that they rejected the cornerstone.  A foundation is built upon a cornerstone.  What foundation is your family built upon?  Is salvation and your Christian life so important to you that you talk about it to everyone you know?  Are you ashamed of the gospel?
Prayer suggestion… Pray that your family will be a light for Christ in your community and not be ashamed.
Family Time 4:
Leader Answers:
  • He is called the Cornerstone because He’s the only One Who saves; the people whom He came to save rejected Him
  • Everyone who believes
  • Discussion ideas:  Have family members share how they have been a light in their community, i.e., work, school, neighborhood
Family Time 5:
Month 11 Topic:  God saves us…Relationship with Jesus
Talk with God: Read…1 Thessalonians 5:9-11
~ 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11  For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ Who died for us, that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with Him.  Therefore encourage one another, and build up one another, just as you also are doing.
  • Did God destine us for wrath?  Is eternal life with Christ just for those who have died?
Walk with God: Discuss… God created us for a relationship with Him.  He did not create us so that we would perish and be separated forever from Him.  That is not God’s plan.  When we accept Christ into our lives as our Savior, our eternal life with Him begins.  How exciting! What does living with Jesus right now look like in your family?  How are you growing in your faith and getting to know Him better?
Prayer suggestion… Thank God for eternal life.  Thank Him that you are living with Him now and He with you.
Family Time 5:
Leader Answers:
  • No; no, for the living, too
  • Discussion ideas:  Have family members discuss how they feel God working in their lives on a daily basis.  What are family members doing to encourage their relationship with Christ?  (i.e., devotionals, prayer, service, church attendance, Bible reading, etc.)

Lisa Life Lesson, “Remember to make The Summer of 2012 a Summer to Remember”

30 days of Summer left! Oh my!

I don't want to put a damper on things, but I do want to remind you that we only have a few days of summer left! Let's make the most of it.  Here are some ideas:

1).  Let the kids cook dinner - teach them to cook a few of their favorite items!
2).  Spend an evening sharing and praying - let each family member share a praise and a prayer request - then go out for ice cream!
3).  Clean a different drawer a day.
4).  Make a special dessert and deliver it to someone you love, a neighbor, or someone whom you've been praying for.
5).  Start a family puzzle.
6).  Take a block of scriptures and let each family member memorize a different verse.
7).  Go to the library and check out some books to read for fun.
8).  Family $1 movie night!
9). Adopt a family to provide school supplies for.
10).  Karaoke night.

These are just a few ideas to help make this summer a summer to remember! Don't miss the opportunity to make every day count.

Prayer Encouragement: "A new thought when answering a daily question ..." by SkyMom, Terrie Chevaillier

A new thought when answering a daily question ...
“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8

What do your kids do?
I am certain that the question has been asked of you and you too have probably   asked the question.  I have been asked and I have asked.
This question is usually framed in the context of inquiring about what sport your child plays.
It’s almost as common as asking an adult…”what do you do”, meaning for employment.
Our family plays sports of all kinds and we love sports of all kinds.
We learn lots on and off the field.  Life skills, conflict resolution skills,
how to loose well and win well, humility, integrity and I could go on.
We like to play and watch sports and have NOTHING AT ALL against sports!
With that said, when I have been asked this question lately…I have almost wanted  to answer something like this…”we are taking a small break from physical training this summer in order to get a little more time than in past summers for some training in godliness….we are finding it really hard to do both sometimes and we want to be careful not to get too out of balance.”
And then the question I often want to ask when I hear other moms talking and struggling with anxiety or maybe exhaustion from lots of children’s sports
Aka…physical training, I desire to ask….”how have your opportunities been for training in godliness?”
In an effort not to sound harsh or legalistic…I often hold back from asking this question to people I do not know very well.
However, my heart sometimes breaks in my own home and for the families in other homes as well when everyone is exhausted and depleted physically, mentally, and spiritually from too much physical training.
1 Timothy 4:8 verse that comes to my heart when that happens.
Let’s pray God’s Word:
Dear Lord, thank you that you give us the ability to run, compete, and train our bodies for service in Your kingdom.  We know the added benefits that exercise brings to our entire body and we need to be good stewards of the body you have given us with exercise and healthy habits.
Your Word says that it is good.  It brings much pleasure to my children when they find joy in participating and growing new friendships and confidence through sports.  These abilities are gifts and we thank You.
Even better than physical training, You tell us that training for godliness promises
benefits not only in the here and now….but in the life to come.
Eternal Blessings that last and never wear out.
Dear Lord, we desire to be moms that find balance in both areas.
Convict our hearts where we are out of balance and then give us courage to make changes where needed so we can get in on the benefits promised!
Amen

Teach Intentionally..."Family Time…Saved from what?", with Stacy Davis ~ Bible Teacher and Sky Ranch Board Member

Family Time…Saved from what?

This week the Sky Ranch family devotional is still on “God saves you” and looks at ”what you are saved from” according to the Bible. One very important part of God’s character is the “righteous and justice side” or judgment side of God. Today in church, the judgment side of God is often skipped and not talked about very much, but God is clear about His wrathful response in the Bible toward the group of people who will not believe Him and go their own way. As a parent who loves your child, you want to talk to your kids about the results of rejecting God just as you would discuss the results of doing drugs. Both have consequences.
As a Mom, I always found that it was easier to discuss the love and mercy side of God with my kids. I enjoyed sharing about my relationship with Jesus and how much that relationship has helped me as I live my life. But the judgment side of God was harder to discuss, usually because it scared my daughter. Unlike my daughter, some kids need to hear about the wrathful side of God because it gets their attention! You know your kids and what works for them. Some kids need to hear about the benefits, others the consequences and some need to hear both benefits and consequences to make an informed decision. Jesus wants a relationship with you and it is a joyous relationship throughout your whole life. This relationship with Jesus also prevents a life on earth apart from God and an eternal life apart from God. The Bible does speak very clearly of a permanent eternal separation from God after life on this earth for anyone who rejects the gospel’s teaching of salvation in Jesus Christ. Scripture teaches that the people who reject Jesus as Lord of their lives will live eternally in a location called “hell” after they leave life on earth. Scripture tells us that hell was originally designed for Satan and his angels who rebelled against God and they do not accept Jesus as Lord of their lives and that the people who reject Jesus will also go there. It is described as fiery place, a pit, darkness and more. It is reserved for judgment. It is a really awful place and no one will ever want to be there. According to the Bible, the decision that you make on earth about Jesus being Lord of your life will determine where you go when you leave earth…if you accept Jesus as your Lord, heaven or if you reject Jesus as your Lord, hell.
This week in your family time, I would encourage you to prepare by praying for your family and asking God to give you wisdom on how to teach your children about the truth of rejecting God and the consequences. The goal is to make this age appropriate and not scare your children. If your kids are young, they may not know anything about God’s punishment or wrath for the people who turn away from God. I have compared “timeout for kids” to “prison for adults” to help my kids understand those concepts. You can explain the basic concepts of God’s punishment to kids to help them understand without scaring them. Ask God to give you the wisdom to know how much to teach your kids on this topic and when to expand on it later. End your discussion by sharing how amazing it is that Jesus loved you so much that He gave up His life so that you could be spared this wrath and instead have a wonderful relationship with God who loves you very much!

This week we are in the 11th  Month Topic and 3rd  Family Time (or page  95) of the Sky Ranch Devotional “Open Your Eyes”…
Family Time 3:
Month 11 Topic:  God saves us…Saved from what?
Talk with God: Read…Romans 5:9, John 3:16-17
~ Romans 5:9  We shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
  • In Romans 5:9, what are we saved from?  Through whom?
~ John 3:16-17  For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.  For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him.”
  • In John 3:16-17, what did God do as a result of His love for us?  If we believe, what will NOT happen?
Walk with God: Discuss… We are saved from the wrath of God.  Why did God send Jesus?  Discuss the great love a father has for his children.  Most parents would give their lives for their children.  But would you die for the sins of your neighbors and everyone at your church?  Your extended family?  People you don’t even know?  God’s love is something we will never know apart from Jesus Christ.
Prayer suggestion… Have each family member thank God for salvation.  Pray that your family will know God and His love on a deeper level than ever before.
Family Time 3:
Leader Answers:
  • The wrath of God; through Christ
  • Gave his only Son; we will not perish (die)
  • Discussion ideas:  Discuss how hard it would be to give your life for people you didn’t know or like.  Discuss sacrifice.

Teach Intentionally..."Family Time…Are you saved?", with Stacy Davis ~ Bible Teacher and Sky Ranch Board Member

Family Time…Are you saved?

As your family time continues with the topic of “God saves you”, this week’s focus from the family devotional discusses “whether or not you are saved” according to the Bible. This is one of the most important parenting conversations that you can have with your kids. Don’t just assume that each person in your family is “saved,” make sure to have this conversation with them. A Biblically saved person is saved from the punishment that they deserve because of their sin against God. God tells us that the punishment for sin against God is the death of that person; and the Bible defines death as being separated from God. Being saved means you are spared from living life on this earth separate from God and spared from living eternally separate from God. A person is saved by believing that Jesus Christ died on the cross in place of you, that He paid the punishment of death for you. Therefore if you believe in Jesus, then you will be spared separation from God while on earth and afterwards.  Scripture refers to this promise as living an abundant life on earth and living eternally with God in heaven.  Scripture also tells us that if your faith is real, then it will be evident and you will be changed by God’s Holy Spirit and you will live a changed lifestyle that you and others will be able to see.
As a Mom, I found the best way to explain salvation is to tell my own salvation story to my kids. I told them basically how I lived before Jesus (of course, an edited version without any inappropriate details) to what finally encouraged me believe Jesus and my changed lifestyle after I believed Him. And I encouraged them to think about their own story of their own faith. Could they tell me how Jesus changed their lives? And my husband shared his own story too. At first, my both kids realized they did not have a story to tell, which we realized later meant they had not really believed Jesus. But over time, they did believe Jesus and now they have a story to tell about their changed lives. It is not an exciting story and it does not need to be…but there does need to be some evidence of a change in behavior and lifestyle. God changes you by cleaning you up and makes you more like He is.
This week in your family time, I would encourage you to prepare by praying for your family and ask God to reveal if everyone in your family is saved. And if anyone is not saved. Ask God to give you the wisdom of how to talk to them and in the devotional discussion time talk about the questions listed. If any of the answers from your family question whether or not they would be allowed into heaven, listen to your kids. It is normal to doubt, if they really do not believe. And they know their own hearts. Ask them if they would like to be saved by Jesus and if they would, then lead them in the salvation prayer in the prayer suggestion. And keep teaching them about Jesus and the amazing relationship with Him. It is not unusual to pray the salvation prayer at different times in a child’s or an adult’s life because the belief was not real previously, so keep praying with them and for them…and stay in God’s Word and you will eventually see amazing changes in them which is evidence of God’s Holy Spirit working in their lives.

Month 11 Topic:  God saves us…Are you saved?

~ Titus 3:5-6  He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, Whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.
  • Were we saved on the basis of our deeds?  Who poured out the Holy Spirit upon us?
Walk with God: Discuss… This Scripture reminds us that our own deeds do not save us.  Jesus did it all.  Discuss salvation amongst your own family members.  Have each of you prayed to receive Jesus Christ into your lives to be saved?  Is the Holy Spirit residing in your life (lives)?  Here are two questions to consider in discussing salvation:  1) If you were to die tonight, do you know for certain you would spend eternity in Heaven? 2) If you were standing before Jesus and He were to say, “Why should I let you into my Heaven?”, what would you say?
Prayer suggestion… Sample prayer of salvation:  Lord, I know I am a sinner and I need a Savior.  I know you are God and you sent Your Son Jesus to live on this earth, live a perfect life, and die for the sins of the world.  I trust You today to save me and come into my heart and live with me for eternity.  Thank You, Lord for saving me.

Prayer Encouragement: "Fill in the Blank" by SkyMom, Terrie Chevaillier

Fill in the Blank
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
1 Corinthians 13: 4-7

I have been reminded of this verse so many times this week
that it will go up on the chalk board in the center of my house.
If I was not out of liquid chalk….it would be up there right now!
However, it is in my heart and the Spirit prompts me with it often.
A little something we tried this week to make this verse personal is
a fill in the blank with YOUR NAME inserted where the scripture says love.
That little exercise has proven to take it to an VERY personal level when
read as Terrie is patient, Hunter is kind, Brooks does not envy, Terrie does not boast, Hunter is not proud….and on we go.
By the end of it, there is usually no room for defense.
Clearly, as we stated our names in place of love….we had failed to love each
other in our family with the fullness of how scripture defines love.
This summer, when the kids are home and there is more together time,
try this fill in the blank with 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7!

Let’s Pray God’s Word:
Dear Father, thank You that You are love.  Everything we need to love others well has been done on the cross.
Why is this truth easy to forget when emotions are high and strength seems low?
We desire to be moms that do not keep a record of wrongs.
We desire patience, and kindness, and selflessness.
Please do the work in our hearts first so then we can love our children
out of the overflow of Christ’s redemptive work in us.
This week, please help our family persevere to walk the talk.
We say we love You, each other, and others, however our actions
fall short when a lot of togetherness comes into play.
Guide us as Sky Moms to live it out first and then talk it out second.
As we do, I pray that our children would
take this truth and our summer would be filled with love where
there could be potential for strife.
Amen
