Teach Intentionally..."Family Time…Obedience to the King", with Stacy Davis ~ Bible Teacher and Sky Ranch Board Member

Family Time…Obedience to the King

If no one would ever know, would you do it? It could be something good or bad…but no one would ever know…would you still do it? That is no human would know…but God would know. The focus this month is on God as your king, your purpose and your obedience to Him. Nothing escapes God, including your obedience or disobedience. In an effort to understand God better, this is an important truth to embrace! Since God is invisible, you can forget sometimes that He is there…but He is there, all the time and watching what you think, say and do. Scripture teaches that God is sees all… “ The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men;   from His dwelling place He looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, He who fashions the hearts of them all , He who understands all their works” (Psalms 33:13-15). Scripture teaches that God knows the thoughts of people too… “know  the  God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts , and understands every intent of the thoughts” (1 chronicle 28:9). How do you know if God really is your King? If God is really your King, you will be obedient to Him. When you truly follow a leader, you will respond when they ask you to do something. If you really follow him and he asks something of you, you won’t say…”no, not today.” You are happy to serve and do what is asked. Your obedience reflects your attitude toward that leader. It is the same with God. If you really serve God and He is your Leader and King, you will respond in obedience and happily serve as asked.
As a Mom, teaching the concept that God knows everything you do…including your thoughts…can be a tough concept to teach. A friend wisely told me to teach my kids that wherever they are or whatever they are doing… picture Jesus sitting next to you. So, when you are about to watch that questionable movie…picture Jesus sitting on the couch next to you…would you still watch it? This exercise has helped get the point across that even though God is invisible, He is still there. But in the end, training in integrity and teaching kids to do the right thing has helped equally as much. It can take time for their relationship with Jesus to develop to a point that they understand His presence is with them all the time.
This week in your family time, I would encourage you to prepare by praying for your family and asking God to reveal if your family truly understands that He is King and obeying God. Does your family understand what God says in scripture well enough to obey it? Do you enjoy doing what is right in God’s eyes? Are you consistent with what you are asking your family to do? It is important for both, you and your husband, to role model integrity, honor and respecting God by obedience, if you are going to ask your kids to do the same. As a group, your family may commit to improving your obedience to God by simply deciding to treat each other in a nicer way. Each person can commit to intentionally be nicer to each member of the family. At the next family time, make note if your family followed through with the commitment and if it improve your family environment.

This week we are in the 9th  Month Topic and 2nd  Family Time (or page  78) of the Sky Ranch Devotional “Open Your Eyes”…
Family Time 2:
Month 9 Topic: God is my King and my purpose…Obedience to the King
Talk with God: Read…Psalm 119:1-6 (NLT)
1 Joyful are people of integrity,
who follow the instructions of the Lord.
2 Joyful are those who obey his laws
and search for Him with all their hearts.
  • What brings us joy?
3 They do not compromise with evil,
and they walk only in His paths.
 4 You have charged us
      to keep Your commandments carefully.
  • How are we to keep His commandments?
5 Oh, that my actions would consistently
      reflect Your decrees!
6 Then I will not be ashamed
when I compare my life with Your commands.
  • According to v. 5, what should our actions reflect?
Walk with God: Discuss… If God is our King, then we should obey Him, right?  Why is this so hard?  Would it be easier to obey an earthly king?  Why?
Prayer suggestion… Ask God to remind your family on a daily basis that He is King.  He is on His throne and He is Lord!
Family Time 2:
Leader Answers:
  • Integrity and obedience
  • Carefully
  • His decrees (His Words)
  • Discussion ideas:  Obedience to God is sometimes hard because it is OUR decision.  Sometimes no one but God knows when we are disobedient.  That’s when character counts!
