Sky Ranch Family Devotional Better Together…Hannah’s Wise Heart, with Stacy A. Davis ~ Bible Teacher and Sky Ranch Board Member

Family Fun Icebreaker: What is wisdom to you?

Topic 2 Question: Who is in God’s Community?

Today’s Big Idea: Hannah’s Wise Heart
God’s community is full of people who turn to God for help by praying. Hannah is a wonderful example of a person who turned to God, praying with all of her heart. Spend time reading 1 Samuel 1:1-28. It is the story of Hannah and the blessing of her son, Samuel. Hannah struggled with a difficult situation. She was mocked and humiliated by other people because of her problem with barrenness, or not being able to have a child. Hannah had a choice in her response. Hannah’s response to the situation showed a heart of wisdom. A wise person knows, like Hannah did, to turn to God and seek His help.

Talk with God: Read the scripture aloud.
But Hannah replied,”…I have poured out my soul before the
LORD.” 1 Samuel 1:15 (NET)

Walk with God: Read aloud and discuss.
You will have difficult situations in your life and there is no avoiding trouble. Your dilemmas may be different from Hannah’s problems, but they can cause you just as much stress. In scripture, God tells you not to be anxious, but in everything pray with thanksgiving and let God know about your prayer requests (Philippians 4:6). God wants you to ask Him for help. He also gives advice to help ease your anxiety, or worry, at the time. He says to thank Him for your hardships. I know that sounds hard, but it really does work. During your next hardship, try it, thank God for the difficulty in your life, asking Him to help you through your problems and showing you His message. Scripture says to seek God first (Matthew 6:33), but often God can be the last place that you turn. God has the answers, but wants you to ask. God doesn’t force His help on you; He waits like a friend until you want His help. Don’t hesitate--seek Him first. Later, you can talk to trusted family members or friends. God can place wise people in your life to speak His truth to you, by guiding your steps through His Word.

Discuss with your family: When you have difficulty, where do you first turn for help? Like Hannah, do you think to pray for help? What would encourage you to seek help from God?

Prayer suggestion: Pray for God’s wisdom to seek His help.

I will be praying for you!
