Community that Cares - Better Together Devotional by Stacy A. Davis

Family Fun Icebreaker: Do you consider yourself servant-hearted? How?

Topic Question: How are we Better Together?

Today’s Big Idea: Community that Cares
God wants His community to help other people have the chance to heal, just as they did, so there is a willingness to share the good news of Jesus. God desires a selfless community of people; He wants a community of servant-hearted people who recognize that you are to give up your own personal needs to serve others. Imagine a world where everyone cares to serve others more than being served themselves, where everyone cares for hearts to heal. Wouldn’t that be nice? That is God’s plan! In the world today, the general desire is to be selfish and be served by others. People think by being served they will be happy. Yet God designed all people and knows the best for you. He says for your heart to be truly happy, or whole, it needs to be healed, and your relationship with Him needs to be restored. You know the truth and trust in Jesus, which is the only way to heal and restore your relationship with God. In God’s community, you will be joined with those who understand the importance of caring for others, who show true love by sharing the truth about Jesus. We care better together.

Talk with God: Read the scriptures aloud.
Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking
of others as better than yourselves. Philippians 2:3 (NLT)
Greater love has no one than this that someone lay down his life
for his friends. John 15:13 (ESV)

Walk with God: Read aloud and discuss.
God wants you to participate in His plan by helping others and caring about them; therefore, you need to learn about others through listening to them. If you don’t listen to someone, you can’t learn how you can help. God shares that when you see someone with obvious needs, like food or clothing, you should do what you can to help them. There are other needs, too, such as needs of the heart. There are many lonely people who really just need a friend. These acts of caring can earn a person’s trust, giving you an opportunity to share the good news of Jesus.

Discuss with your family: Do you look for opportunities to talk to new friends? What are some ways to include others in your conversations? How can you start conversations that lead to helping someone heal? Why would God want His community to look for opportunities to share the healing message of Jesus?

Prayer suggestion: Pray for God to show you someone around you that needs you as a friend.
