Teach Intentionally..."Family Time…Service to the King", with Stacy Davis ~ Bible Teacher and Sky Ranch Board Member

Family Time…Service to the King

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. - Peter 4:10
What would Jesus do? How often should a Christian ask them self this question? All the time! This month's focus on God as your King and your purpose keeps the family looking at God and our respect for His office as our Leader. One of the best ways to show who you follow is to serve Him. Romans 12:1 tell you that an active lifestyle of serving God is the best form of worshipping God. What does a lifestyle of serving God look like? It would be a lifestyle of always asking yourself…what would Jesus do? It would be a lifestyle of looking for ways to provide for the needs of those around you and to share the life changing message of Jesus with others.
As a Mom, helping your kids connect the message in scripture to actively living it out in your lifestyle is one of the biggest challenges to parenting. The best way to display this lifestyle is to lead by example and in any situation ask yourself "what would Jesus do?" You can teach your kids to search for ways to help in the church and in their community of friends. They may enjoy singing in the youth choir, serving on mission trips, or just inviting a friend to go to church. God can use our service in many ways. My daughter and a few friends saw a need at her school for a lunchtime bible study in a secular high school. She committed to find a study and lead the group in discussion once a week. It was not a large group, but their hearts were right in desiring to honor God with their time and focus on Him. She led right where God placed her and He blessed it!
This week in your family time, I would encourage you to prepare by praying for your family and asking for  God to show you if anyone in your family needs help understanding how they can serve God with the gifts that He has given to them. There are many ways to serve God, but discovering the gifts that He gave you can be a challenge and are not always obvious to you. After you become a Christian, God gives you a desire to serve Him and gives you special abilities or gifts.  The gifts that He gives to you will be interesting to you and will help you reach out to the people that He wants you to serve. Ask yourselves…how do you enjoy showing kindness and encouraging others? Look at the people God has placed around you...and ask how can you serve so they see Jesus in you? Encourage your family to reach out to the people around them and point the way to Jesus by their words and actions.

This week we are in the 9th  Month Topic and 3rd Family Time (or page  73) of the Sky Ranch Devotional “Open Your Eyes”…
Family Time 3:
Month 9 Topic: God is my King and my purpose…Service to the King
Talk with God: Read…Romans 12:1, 6-8
~ Romans 12:1  Therefore I urge you dear brothers to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship.  Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.
  • What do we need to do first, before we test and approve God’s will, according to v. 1?
  • Is God’s will perfect in v. 1?
~ Romans 12:6-8  And since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let each exercise them accordingly; if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; (7) if service, in his serving, or he who teaches, in his teaching; (8) or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
  • Why do we all have different gifts per v. 6-8?
Walk with God: Discuss… As we just read, all members of the body have different gifts.  What gifts is your family blessed with?  Go around and discuss these gifts as a family.  How can you serve others with these gifts?  Are you using them for the Lord?  Why or why not?  Set goals to begin using your gifts as a family to serve and minister to those around you.
Prayer suggestion… Ask God to help you use your gifts as a family for His glory.
Family Time 3:
Leader Answers:
  • Offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God
  • Yes
  • We have different gifts so we can all serve in different ways, meeting the needs of the body of Christ
  • Discussion ideas:  Don’t limit yourselves to the gifts written in these verses.  Many gifts are given to God’s people.  Some will be easy to state, yet others will be more introspective and thoughtful.  Bless each family member and exhort through this time.
